House of Assembly to have short session
It should be a short day in Parliament today as just four items on the order sheet will be discussed by the Island's legislators.
Finance Minister Eugene Cox will introduce two bills - one which proposes to update the Companies Act and another to enhance the Bermuda Monetary Authority's powers to fight money laundering.
The House will also discuss regulations for the Statistics Act, a bill passed in February this year, which gave the Chief Statistician new powers to collect information.
Intended to improve decision making by Government, the Act makes it compulsory for businesses, community groups and individuals to provide information requested by the Statistics department.
It was opposed by the Opposition United Bermuda Party (UBP) which argued it was heavy handed and made it possible for Government to violate individuals' privacy rights.
And MPs will also discuss Government's proposal to purchase land in Sandys Parish for public access.
