I'm no knife-wielding thug, man tells court

A Warwick man appeared in Magistrates' Court to answer charges of possessing a bladed weapon and using threatening behaviour.

Joshua Price, 19, pleaded not guilty to possessing a six-inch blade on August 29 and not guilty to waiving the knife in a threatening manner on Spring Hill Road, Warwick.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner heard that Price confronted Michael Caines with the weapon and said to him: "Come down here, I will kill you."

Mr. Warner adjourned the matter until September 6 when Price will appear in court for mention. He was bailed for $1,500, with one surety, and the conditions of bail require Price to stay from the complainant or any witnesses.

Also in Magistrates' Court yesterday, Damien Mendoza, 30, of Link Lane, Hamilton Parish, pleaded not guilty to possessing a bladed article and using threatening behaviour on August 31, 2004.

Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale told the court Mendoza had been ejected from the Splash nightclub in Hamilton.

Security staff escorted him out of the club and then removed from his pocket an unopened five-inch butterfly knife. Police were called and he was arrested.

Mendoza told Mr. Warner: "I am not a knife wielding thug, I am a father with children and a certified electrician."

He said at the time of the incident he had been collecting his tools for work but does not why he was ejected from the club.

Mr. Warner adjourned the matter until September 28 when Mendoza will appear in court for mention. He was bailed for $2,000, with one surety.
