Independence report ready
The Independence train may yet begin to pick up some steam following reports that the Progressive Labour Party has fully deliberated the matter and come to a position.
Former party chairman Neville Tyrell confirmed this week that he had completed extensive consultations with the party membership and had handed in a report to the Premier.
He said meetings with the party over the last three months were ?certainly well attended and very lively? and had revealed a ?divergence of views? on Independence.
But he was not prepared to say whether any one in the ruling party was against independence.
Deputy Premier Ewart Brown has also handed in a report ? on how to proceed to independence.
It is now for the Government to study the papers and come up with its own way forward.
?It was a tiring exercise but at the same time gratifying,? said Senator Tyrell of the party consultations.
?We?ve characterised it as a way forward document, an outline on the procedures. It is not a position paper,? added ruling party spokesman Scott Simmons.
?I believe that the way forward will be satisfactory to our membership and will be seen as satisfactory and we absolutely appreciate the time our membership has put into it in coming out and expressing themselves.?
Premier Alex Scott started the ball rolling by calling for a national dialogue on Independence in February.
