Inmate released by mistake recaptured

An inmate who was mistakenly released by Westgate prison staff almost three months ago was recaptured by Police earlier this week, a spokesman said yesterday.

As has previously reported, Kevin Leroy Butterfield was supposed to be incarcerated awaiting a Supreme Court trial for robbery.

However, he was set free on May 15 by staff who were unaware he had had his bail revoked. He failed to show show up for his trial on July 17, and a Police search was launched.

Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety Robert Horton called the premature release of Butterfield ?unacceptable and inexcusable?.

The news came a week after it emerged that a convicted paedophile had been allowed out of custody at the Transitional Living Centre to attend a concert in what Mr. Horton described as an ?error of judgement.?

The Police spokesman was unable to give any details on the circumstances surrounding Butterfield being apprehended, but confirmed that he was arrested on the Island.
