Isaac was engaged to three women ? Thompkins
Harrison Isaac Jr. was engaged to three women at once during his $2 million fraud against the Bermuda Government, a jury has heard.
One of these fianc?es was Teketa Thompkins, a former exotic dancer accused of being his partner in crime.
In evidence to the court where she faces fraud, conspiracy and money laundering charges, Thompkins said she only discovered the truth about Isaac after being arrested.
Her lawyer, Paul Madden, claims she is an innocent woman who was fooled by Isaac, an apparently wealthy management accountant and businessman. Isaac said in testimony earlier this week that Thompkins was unaware the money was stolen.
But according to prosecutors, Thompkins, 33, knew what she was doing when she received $1.4 million in stolen cash from him. They allege she funnelled large chunks of it back to Isaac through various means and laundered it to make it appear legitimate. She was arrested in March 2004 smuggling $30,000 into Bermuda for him.
Thompkins faces charges spanning August 2003 to April 2004 at the US District Court in Manhattan, because the Government account Isaac raided was with the Bank of New York, Wall Street. She denies them all. Isaac pleaded guilty to fraud charges in August 2006 and was jailed.
Giving her version of events for the first time yesterday, Thompkins told how Isaac romanced her. In a softly spoken southern accent, she told jurors she lives in the small town of Lizella, Georgia, with her parents and 20-month-old son. She had an early career in the US Army before taking up jobs as an exotic dancer and bar tender at an adult entertainment club in Atlanta.
She met Isaac when she joined other models to shoot a swimsuit calendar and video in Bermuda for his company Bermuda on the Rocks. During this trip to the Island, in July and August 2003, she said the models and video crew went out on yachts and to restaurants and had hotel suites and masseuses - all paid for by Isaac.
Describing her first impressions of the man who went on to romance her, she said: ?He was sweet. He was busy all the time with the different things he had going on?I mean a guy?s inviting people from Georgia and New York, he?s paying for everything, then you go to this country and everyone?s got their own room or guest cottage. He had money.?
She said that besides working as a Government accountant, Isaac had a hairdressing business, a modelling agency, and promoted concerts. When she told him she risked losing her home due to financial problems he offered to buy it for her.
?He asked for banking and financial information. I wrote down my name, I wrote down everything - my nickname, my Dad?s name, my address. If he says he?s going to take care of my house and everything for me?? she told the jury, her voice trailing off.
On August 7 2003 Isaac wired the first lump sum of $380,000 to her bank, with other large amounts following. Thompkins told the jury Isaac?s explanation was that he needed to send money to her US business account because he could not get one as a Bermudian citizen. He then asked her to place the cash in his personal US bank account.
?He held himself out as a wealthy man,? she said, insisting he gave her no reason to believe he was being dishonest.
In January 2005, Isaac proposed to her after dressing her up in an evening gown and taking her for a meal at the Sea Horse Grill on a trip to Bermuda. She only learned the marriage was not to be when the criminal proceedings arose.
Mr. Madden asked her: ?Did you later learn he was having relations and engaged to two other women while he was dating you??
Referring to the court case, Thompkins replied: ?Yes - when all of this came up. I was hurt.?
She said after the FBI began investigating her, she was no longer interested in continuing the relationship ?because of the stuff I was going through. I mean all of this.?
In answer to cross-examination from assistant district attorney Jonathan Abernethy, Thompkins said she saw on bank statements that the money Isaac sent came from the Government of Bermuda.
?I knew it was from Harrison. It says ?Government of Bermuda Accountant? which is what Mr. Isaac was,? she told the prosecutor.
The case continues.
