The memorial events to mark the anniversary of September 11 in Bermuda were brought to an emotional end last night with a musical performance at Dockyard.

In a special hour event to commemorate the fallen of the terrorist attacks, the Bermuda Regiment Band and the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band gave a rendition of pieces by American composers.

Acting Premier Eugene Cox was accompanied in the audience by Acting Governor Tim Gurney and US Consul General Denis Coleman Jr. at the event outside the Clock Tower.

With a mix of lively and emotional tunes it was a fitting way to mark the day that has been etched into people's memories all over the world.

Among the numbers played was 'America the Beautiful' and 'I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy'.

But heads bowed and eyes filled when the bands played a moving rendition of 'Amazing Grace', which included solo pieces. The crowd was also entertained by a display of Highland dancing from the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band Dance Division.

At the end of the performance everybody stood and observed one minute's silence to pay their respects to those that died a year ago yesterday.

Among the 300-strong crowd were both locals and tourists alike.

Jack and Alice Beeler, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania are visiting the Island on board the Nordic Empress this week.

Mr. Beeler said: "It's been a bit of a sad day. We have been thinking back to what we were doing this time last year but we had a memorial on the boat and then we decided to come here tonight. It has been wonderful.

"I don't think we will forget this year either."
