Jet?s tyres burst on landing

A private jet had a close call when its tyres burst as it landed at the Bermuda International Airport yesterday.

And heavy cross-winds at the Airport caused several commercial flights to either be diverted or cancelled yesterday.

Airport general manager James Howes said the private jet had tried to land on three occasions at about 9.15 a.m. yesterday.

?The pilot tried to land on one occasion and missed the approach, he then tried on a second occasion and also missed the approach. On the third occasion he was able to land, but the plane?s left main landing gear burst.?

Mr. Howes said no one was hurt in the incident.

Mr. Howes could not say whether the cross-winds had anything to do with the landing, because he had not interviewed the pilot.

Mr. Howes said the Delta flight from Boston was diverted to Atlanta.

?Some of the gusts recorded were up to 40 miles an hour and the only planes that did land was a corporate jet, American Airlines and the Air Canada flight.

?The Air Canada pilots are used to flying in all sorts of weather and are better trained for these conditions.?

The Delta flight which was diverted to Atlanta was expected in at 7 last evening, three hours after the scheduled landing time.

The American Airlines flight 686 from New York was one hour late, but was able to land yesterday afternoon, but the US Air flight out of Philadelphia was cancelled because of the cross-winds.
