Killers appear in court

Just prior to the beginning of the trial of Jamal (Chicke) Robinson, 28, and Keniel Alfred Ingham, 24, Crown prosecutor Dorien Taylor asked Assistant Supreme Court Justice Archibald Warner to amend the indictment in relation to the men by removing references to a third man - Ryan Rudolph Ball - and changing the murder charge to one of manslaughter.

Ball pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in the death of Mr. Pitcher earlier this year and was sentenced to ten years in prison on April 11.

Yesterday, both Ingham and Robinson entered not guilty pleas to the new charge that they unlawfully killed Mr. Pitcher on February 27 last year.

Robinson is represented by attorney Victoria Pearman while Venous Telford is defending Ingham. Both defence attorneys argued yesterday that the trial should be adjourned as they had not yet received all the necessary documents from the prosecution.

The defence attorneys said that some 22 statements the prosecution wanted to refer to in calling its witnesses were not included in the official court record.

And Ms Pearman said that she had not even received the documents as they may have been issued to the defendant's family before she had signed on to the case.

Ms Pearman said she did not recognise the signature on a document indicating that the statements had been received and would be unable to present her client with an adequate defence unless given time to review these statements.

Mr. Warner warned all the court officers that he would not allow any unnecessary delays in the trial which promises to be lengthy.

A jury of eight women and four men was selected but legal arguments on whether the 22 statements would be admitted as official court documents prevented the trial from continuing yesterday and the jury was told to return this morning.

Mr. Pitcher, 28, was stabbed to death with a weapon that appeared to be a machete during an early morning brawl.

There were reportedly dozens of onlookers to the fight outside the former Ambassador's Club when it broke out but witnesses fled as events turned bloody.

Mr. Pitcher was pronounced dead on arrival at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
