Large amount of potentially lethal drug stolen

Police made an appeal for information last night after a haul of the potentially lethal drug methadone was stolen from St. Brendan's Hospital.

A large quantity of liquid and tablet form methadone, which is used to help treat heroin addiction, was stolen at about 10.50 p.m. on Monday from the methadone clinic of the hospital, which is based in Devonshire.

Chief medical officer for King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and St. Brendan's Hospital Dr. John Cann said that even a small dose of the drug could prove fatal if used inappropriately.

"Methadone is a synthetic narcotic analgesic (pain reliever)," said Dr. Cann.

"It should only be used under the supervision of a physician. Methadone may have significant effects on the respiratory and circulatory systems and should not be used by individuals with asthma or respiratory conditions, or by pregnant women."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Sergeant Nick Pedro at Central CID on 295-5001, or the CrimeStoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477, where information can be offered anonymously.
