Law catches up with woman driver
Failure to show up for a previous court appearance caught up with a 22-year-old woman who was arrested early on Saturday after being involved in a hit-and-run collision.
Miriam Matthews, of Alexandra Road, Devonshire, was stopped by Police at the corner of Elliott and Princess streets.
In Magistrates' Court this week, the woman was disqualified from driving all vehicles for 12 months and fined $400 for being in care and control of a vehicle while she was impaired by alcohol.
Matthews was also fined $250 for providing false information to Police.
Acting Senior Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said Matthews was charged with causing unlawful grievous bodily harm to a woman in June, 2003, but failed to appear in court less than a year later after she was bailed.
"I don't remember that," Ms Matthews said.
Duty counsel Charles Richardson said Matthews was out of Bermuda at that time.
Mr. Tokunbo ordered Matthews to pay $1,000 immediately for forfeiting her old bail conditions and granted her new bail of $2,000 with one surety, to appear in court for a grievous bodily harm trial on September 6.
She also had to immediately pay $1,000 in unpaid fines for being in charge of a vehicle without any third party insurance on February 2.
Matthews must pay the rest of her fines by June 30 or spend 60 days in prison.
