Minibus legislation on House agenda

New legislation allowing minibuses to apply for licences to operate across Bermuda is to be discussed in the House of Assembly today.

The Motor Car Amendment (No.5) Act 2006, which seeks to establish a system of permits for the operation of minibuses throughout the Island, will receive its second reading.

The Government believes the move would improve transport links for people living in the most remote parts of the country.

However, some taxi drivers have claimed it could cause them to lose vital trade.

Terry Lister, speaking to The Royal Gazette in the absence of chief whip Ottiwell Simmons, who was off the Island last night, said: "There are certain areas of the country where bus services are inadequate. Residents complain taxis are not available and they need service. Minibus companies say they will provide that service.

"We have to ask if these people are being serviced. If so, fine. If not, then minibuses will have the opportunity to expand the service."

Other matters to be discussed include the second reading of the Motor Car Amendment (No.4) Act 2006, which deals with the importation of over-sized cars.

The Fisheries Amendment (No. 2) Act 2006 will also receive its second reading.
