Government is no nearer to deciding how to handle the replacement of the Causeway which shattered during Hurricane Fabian as four people were swept to their deaths.

Government spent $2.2 million on rebuilding the road which links the Airport to the rest of the Island.

Experts have already predicted this year?s hurricane season will be more intense.

Asked if he was worried, Works and Engineering Minister Ashfield DeVent said Government was still assessing the damage from Fabian. ?There?s some level of urgency but they did a relatively good job on the Causeway and it stood for many, many years.

?We just happened to have Fabian which did extreme damage. We just have to keep our fingers crossed. I won?t be able to get a bridge before the hurricane season.? Mr. DeVent said funding had been identified for feasibility studies. ?It?s a major project. We need to know if we need to replace it in that same general area or put it somewhere else. Because of my technical background I would rather measure twice and cut once before I make a big mistake.? St. George?s Mayor E. Michael Jones has called for for a high bridge like Watford Bridge to link Blue Hole with Stonecrusher Corner on Kindley Field Road after stressing the problems St. George?s residents had suffered with the Causeway partially out of action.
