Minister wrong on Bermuda award
Tourism Minister Renee Webb was mistaken when she told the House of Assembly on Wednesday that Bermuda had been placed on the "Best Island" list in the highly respected Travel & Leisure magazine, Shadow Tourism Minister David Dodwell said yesterday.
Ms Webb made her comment in the House of Assembly after joining in Opposition Leader Grant Gibbons' congratulatory remarks to the Reefs Hotel, owned by Mr. Dodwell, for making the "Best Value for Hotels in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda" list in the same magazine for the third year in a row.
Noting that Dr. Gibbons had not mentioned Bermuda's position on the "Best Island" list this year, Ms Webb said she hoped he was simply unaware of the fact, and not deliberately ignoring it in an effort to avoid admitting the PLP Government was actually doing something right.
However Mr. Dodwell, complete with a printout from the Travel & Leisure website, told The Royal Gazette later that Bermuda was placed on the "Best Island" list in Travel & Leisure magazine last year, 2002 - not 2003.
