A Police manhunt is underway after North Village and national team footballer Jemieko Jennings was injured in an "unprovoked" attack at the Government Quarry in Hamilton Parish.

Police media relations officer Robin Simmons confirmed last night that the 25-year-old Pembroke resident had been savagely attacked by a known assailant last week at the Government owned facility, and that investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

"Police are investigating an assault that took place at the Government Quarry in Hamilton Parish around 11.20 a.m. on Thursday, November 9. It appears the victim a 25-year-old Pembroke man was assaulted by the suspect, a 24-year-old St. David's man who punched him in the face several times.

"The victim attended hospital for treatment of facial injuries while the suspect, who is not in custody at this time, and the victim are known to each other. Inquiries to the incident are ongoing," Simmons said.

In recent years Jennings has established himself as a key cog in midfield at Village where he also coaches at the youth level.

Jennings was a member of Bermuda's national football team that participated in the 2004 FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament.

Meanwhile, a North Village Community Club (NVCC) spokesperson confirmed last night that Jennings had suffered a broken nose and fractured cheek bone during the unprovoked attack.

"Jemieko went there (Government Quarry) to pick up a vehicle when he was attacked. This attack was completely unprovoked and was very cowardly in nature," the spokesperson said.

"This attack occurred on Government property and we want to see justice done because this has severely affected the North Village family. For something like this to happen in a public place makes things even more frustrating.

"The North Village community has been severely impacted and everyone is very upset over the circumstances relating to this matter. And we want to see justice done as expeditiously as possible.

"Jemieko is an educated young Bermudian who is making a good life for himself who continues to contribute to Bermuda and the community. He is also one of our youth coaches here at Village and so you can imagine the effect this is having on the kids."

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president Larry Mussenden added: "Although this matter is unrelated to football, as a member of the football family we at the BFA would like to wish Jemieko a speedy recovery.

"We are always concerned whenever a member gets into a position of difficulty. And we know Jemieko has the support of his club and the wider family of football here in Bermuda."

Jennings last represented Village on November 5 in a Premier Division clash against Dandy Town at St.John's Field.

The Village playmaker, however, was not due to travel this Friday to Barbados with the national team for their second round Digicel Cup Group G qualifying matches against St.Vincent & the Grenadines, Bahamas and hosts Barbados.

In 2003, Jennings, son of former Village winger Garrett (Punchy) Dill, underwent football trials with Canadian Professional League outfit, Hamilton Thunder along with cousin and last season's BFA MVP, Keith Jennings.
