New features for St. George?s street festival
Extra attractions have been added to the St. George's Market Night Street Festival which starts tomorrow to bring added fun and enjoyment for visitors and locals.
Bringing more people to the East End is the intention of the event this year, that's why more has been added to the event in the town square with live entertainment, a central food court with seating and a supervised "kiddie korner" with games and family fun.
"For the 2006 season we really wanted to capture a festive and fun atmosphere. Greater visibility, livelier entertainment, bigger attractions and added convenience are all aimed at bringing in the crowds ? we want tourists and locals alike to feel there's a good reason to come and enjoy the fun festival with a St. George's flair," said Grant Kennedy, festival committee spokesman and a jam maker.
The revamped and re-branded festival will, as in previous years, include late-night shopping and more than 45 vendors selling local art, crafts, jewellery and speciality food items. It will be held on Tuesday evenings between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. throughout the summer.
It is also intended to hold a special Thursday night festival once a month, although this is still be planned.
Mr. Kennedy said the revitalisation of the festival had been a collaborative effort between veteran members of the organising committee and new members.
Major sponsors include the Department of Tourism, Butterfield Bank, Ace Foundation, St. George's Club, Belco, Chamber of Commerce, Island Press and Logic.
