No inquest in Archibald death
Police confirmed yesterday that there will be no inquest into the death of Rupert Elroy Archibald because an autopsy last year concluded the former prisoner died of natural causes.
Police Media Relations spokesman Dwayne Caines said the autopsy revealed Mr. Archibald died of a heart attack, or a myocardial infarction, which was brought on by natural causes as he was being taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in an ambulance on July 15 last year after complaining of chest pains at the Westgate Correctional Facility.
At the time, Home Affairs permanent secretary Robert Horton said autopsies were always performed after sudden deaths, whether the person is incarcerated or not.
Mr. Archibald had been serving a 30-year sentence for his part in the 1997 armed robbery of the Somerset branch of the Bank of Bermuda.
