Ombudsman to probe allegations of racism at KEMH

The inquiry into claims of racism against black doctors at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital will be investigated by the Bermuda Ombudsman and will be independent of Government, it was confirmed last night.

Ombudsman Arlene Brock said after consultation with the Human Rights Commission and Bermuda Hospitals Board it appeared that the "jurisdiction and legislative framework" of the Ombudsman's office was best equipped to probe the hospital allegations.

A statement released by the Office of the Ombudsman added: "Under the Bermuda Constitution, the Ombudsman is totally independent of the Government.

"Therefore, her inquiry will not be conducted in collaboration with, under the control of or otherwise in association with any Ministry or other body."

Premier Alex Scott confirmed on Friday that a hospital inquiry had been launched.
