Overspend results from merger

Government spent $351,800 more than originally anticipated on the Fire Services last year due to plans to merge the three brigades into one national service from April 1.

The amalgamation of the Bermuda Fire Service, the St. George?s Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Crash Fire and Rescue Service at the Airport meant terminating a contract with BAS/Serco which provides the Airport service.

Presenting a breakdown of the budget overspend in the House of Assembly on Friday, Government Minister Wayne Perinchief said $315,000 had been given to BAS/Serco in severance pay.

In addition, a figure of $36,000 that was not originally budgeted went to Gareath Adderley, chief of the St. George Service and a 28-year brigade veteran. Mr. Adderley confirmed yesterday that he has been made redundant as part of the merger, and is due to finish work on March 31.
