Paget council to meet on crime
While traditionally thought to be a safe and quiet parish, Paget just like the rest of Bermuda is not immune to crime. In fact several violent fights have taken place at the Ice Queen on Middle Road ? one, three years ago, ended in the death of Tekle Mallory. More recently neighbourhood Primary School Gilbert Institute was targeted by vandals who hit the school during the summer recess causing more than $7,000 damage.
The culprits sprayed graffiti and broke up lunch benches.
And just last month 51-year-old masseur Charly Sternath was handed a two-year prison sentence for his sexual assault on a 79-year old woman.
Sternath had broken into the woman?s home naked with only a hood on his head ? and masturbated in front of her until he ejaculated on her.
Charges against him also included prowling near three other women and breaking and entering.
With such violence taking place in the parish chairman of the Paget Parish Council, Shirley White has organised a meeting for tonight.
The meeting set to begin at 7 p.m. at Gilbert Institute will see the parish?s new community beat officer P.c. Scott Devine in attendance.
Mrs. White said the meeting would be of interest to all residents, especially those who have concerns about crime but noted that any other concerns like litter or traffic can also be brought to the fore.
The Paget Parish Council is a Government-appointed body that deals with Paget community matters.
It gives scholarships to Paget residents and donates funds for improvements. Its most recent financial contribution was to Gilbert Institute?s playground.
