Paget West: UBP takes seat

There was no surprise as the UBP's Patricia Gordon-Pamplin defeated the PLP's Leopold Kuchler convincingly in Paget West.

Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin - former Shadow Minister of Home Affairs and Labour - captured 633, or 75 percent, of the votes.

Mr. Kuchler, the Honorary Consul of Austria, grabbed 211, or 25 percent, of the votes.

Voter turnout was lower than expected with only 77 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

"I am relieved. It is very humbling that the people of Paget West selected me to represent them," said Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin after her victory. "I plan to follow up on the things I have promised as best I can. I thank all those who voted for me and I will work to fulfil their expectations. I am very pleased that I will have the chance to represent Paget West for the next term and I will do all in my power to serve the people of this constituency."

Mr. Kuchler was in good spirits after his loss. "I had no expectations," he said. "When I came here today I set a goal of getting a quarter of the votes and as it turns out I got exactly that. I am comfortable knowing that a quarter of the voters felt that I was the best man for the job.

"I have been very busy and have not been able to canvas as much as I would have liked. I'm not sure how much that affected the outcome, however, because this area has voted UBP consistently throughout history. I congratulate Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin and wish her well in representing this constituency.

"I am very happy with the result. I appreciate the votes and I thank all those who voted for me. I am excited to have received the votes I did but mostly I feel privileged to have been a part of this election."
