?Persistent traffic offender? jailed

A repeat traffic offender was jailed for 30 days in Magistrates? Court yesterday for driving while disqualified.

Shannon Smith, 26, of Bean Dale, Spanish Point, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified at 10.30 a.m. on Middle Road on February 10.

Smith also pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice at the same date and time by supplying Police with a fake name and date of birth and also admitted not wearing a seat belt.

Smith said he only took the wheel of a black Toyota Yaris because the driver was drunk.

But Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrossen said Smith was supposed to be off the road until March 31, 2007.

Smith was first banned for 12 months on June 1, 2004 for impaired driving, Ms Vaucrossen said and Smith admitted taking Police on a high-speed chase across the Island on April 1, 2005.

The court extended his driving ban until 2007 she said and prior to 2004 Smith had convictions for dangerous driving and speeding at 132kph.

?You are not only a persistent traffic offender but you persistently treat this court with contempt,? Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said. ?You?re going to kill somebody. You are the type of person not permitted to drive on the road.?

Before being taken away by Police, the Magistrate asked Smith, who was un-represented, to try and appeal his case to a higher court.

?Go and ask Supreme Court if I have been unfair to you,? Mr. Warner said.

Smith?s reply was not audible.
