Pitcher punch-up splits workers at job site
Police are still investigating a fight which broke out on Wednesday between a Government MP and one of his workers.
St. George's South MP Arthur Pitcher was involved in a punch-up with one of the employees at the Southside building project of his company, Coleron Construction.
The man later contacted Police about the incident and went to hospital to have his injuries treated.
It is understood the man sustained 'slight' injuries to the neck in the altercation.
When contacted by The Royal Gazette yesterday, Mr. Pitcher refused to speak on the incident before abruptly hanging up.
A Police spokesman said the investigation is still "active", although reports that Mr. Pitcher had been in Police custody Wednesday night were incorrect.
The Royal Gazette understands Police have yet to speak to Mr. Pitcher or the worker with whom he came to blows.
Yesterday, contrasting accounts of working conditions on the site emerged, with some claiming Mr. Pitcher is verbally abusive to workers while others came forward to defend the Government backbencher.
The Royal Gazette was originally told that the fight between the two men apparently broke out when Mr. Pitcher told the man he was being let go from the job.
Yesterday a Coleron Construction employee specifically contacted The Royal Gazette in order to defend Mr. Pitcher's actions.
The man - who refused to be named because "there would be repercussions" - said Mr. Pitcher had given the the man he fought with many chances in the past.
He said he did not believe the man was seriously injured in the scuffle and - while he had not witnessed the fight - he saw the man walk away, unharmed, to his vehicle.
"He was fine. He wasn't in any pain or anything," Mr. Pitcher's supporter said.
If there is tension on the site, he said, it is a result of people taking sides since Wednesday's altercation and because some people are fearful for their jobs.
"Arthur Pitcher probably gave that guy five different chances," he said.
He claimed that many of the workers at the project have been given similar breaks and opportunities by Mr. Pitcher.
