Police appeal for witnesses
POLICE are appealing for witnesses to the Sunday evening accident that left the Police Commissioner's son brain-dead.
Andrew Jackson, 27-year-old son of Commissioner George Jackson, lost control of his moped at about 8.35 p.m. on Sunday, crashing into a wall on Middle Road in Warwick, near the junction with Riddell's Bay Road.
Anyone who may have seen the accident, or anyone who saw or spoke to Mr. Jackson up to 24 hours prior to his crash, is urged to contact the Police.
This is the second serious accident involving the son of a police officer in the past month.
In late November, 19-year-old David Small, son of PC Eunice Lambert and retired PC David Small, died after colliding with an SUV at Warwick Lane, near the site of Mr. Jackson's crash.
Thus far, 2008 is second only to 1998 in terms of road traffic fatalities per year. Ten years ago, 17 people died in Bermuda as a result of accidents on the island's roads. Already this year, 15 people have lost their lives thanks to collisions, many the result of drunk driving.
Road safety campaigner Joseph Froncioni told The Royal Gazette this week that such a high incidence of death or disability on the roads should not happen in an "affluent developed country" like Bermuda.
Anyone who can assist with Sunday's accident is encouraged to contact PC Wayne Sealy at the Somerset Police Station.
He can be reached on 234-1010 or 335-2212.
