Police concerned over attacks on officers

The Bermuda Police Service is concerned over the latest attack on an off-duty officer and has warned it would be extra vigilant against any future incidents involving its staff.

And although Police media spokesman Dwayne Caines would not comment that assaults on officers are on the rise, he said: "It is a concern that members of the Bermuda Police Service and other services sworn to uphold the law are being targeted for assaults.

"The Bermuda Police Service does not want to make a major differentiation on attacks on civilians and Police, because we are just as concerned when members of the public are targeted. However, we will do everything in our power to ensure that the offending parties are brought to justice."

The warning comes in the wake of the assault of a female off-duty officer at the Captain's Lounge bar last Friday night - the second attack on a Police officer in a week.

A 20-year-old female Police officer suffered head and face injuries after the attack by another woman. It is also alleged that the attacks spilled over into the weekend at a soccer match, where friends and family members of the two women became embroiled in another melee.

Yesterday, Police said an investigation was continuing into the matter, but no arrests had been made.

Last Wednesday, P.c. David Strong was the subject of a road rage attack, which resulted in the officer being slapped and punched by an assailant after a confrontation on the roadside.

These incidents follow the attack of an off-duty Prison officer outside the Club 40 Nightclub on New Year's Eve, in an alleged gang attack.

The Prison officer received severe facial injuries. No arrests have been made and Police said that investigation is ongoing.
