No inquest will be held into the death of Eugene Lloyd (Josh) Smith. The body of 57-year-old Mr. Smith was found on the morning of February 25 behind the Hamilton Parish Workmen's Club. At the time, it was thought that the father-of-three had been beaten to death. "The initial Police assessment of the scene strongly suggested foul play to the extent that the senior investigating officer, in keeping with established Police practice, treated the event as a suspicious death," said Police spokesman Dwayne Caines. However, after overseas experts examined the scene and conducted an autopsy on Mr. Smith, it was determined that he died from an acute internal medical condition.

"...We can confirm there was no evidence of acute injury to Mr. Smith's body," Mr. Caines said. "Bermuda Police Service is satisfied based on reports that we have received that his death was due to natural causes."

Therefore, after consultation with the Coroner, Mr. Caines said it has been determined that an inquest into Mr. Smith's death is no longer necessary in view of the conclusion reached by the pathologist examination.
