Premier still silent over BHC claims
Whether any action will be taken against two Cabinet Ministers implicated in the Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) scandal remains a mystery almost one month after the allegations were launched.
Yesterday, however, Government Information Services told The Royal Gazette that Premier Jennifer Smith was still expected to make a statement on the matter - although it was unclear when that would be forthcoming.
It was not expected today, however, as members of Government will be attending the funeral of former colleague and Tourism Minister David Allen.
After sacked BHC general manager Raymonde Dill made claims against Health Minister Nelson Bascome and Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown in the Bermuda Sun last month, the Premier said she would meet with both men to discuss the allegations.
The Premier also pledged to keep the public informed on the outcome of those discussions.
Mr. Dill claimed Mr. Bascome ordered him to give a $300,000 landscaping contract to a company which had not even submitted a bid - in breach of the quango's rules. Mr. Bascome has since denied those claims.
He told The Royal Gazette last week he and the Premier had met to discuss the matter but any further statement on their meeting should come from her.
"My conscience is clear," Mr. Bascome said.
Mr. Dill also claimed in the Bermuda Sun, that one reason BHC's Southside project ran behind schedule was that one of the contractors, Bermuda Composite Construction (BCC), was running out of money because Dr. Brown, who also employed the company to work on his South Shore house, owed the company more than $400,000.
Dr. Brown had said the reason he had withheld payments to BCC was because he had been overbilled by $200,000 and there were "major quality issues". He said the matter was in the hands of his lawyers.
This week, Dr. Brown said while he and the Premier had not had a one-on-one meeting about the allegations, the matter was discussed during last week's Cabinet session.
"I don't expect any further action from the Premier," he said.
