Queen's 50th anniversary of coronation gets stamp of approval

Heritage stamps 2003.

A special new $25 express postage stamp will be released on Monday to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Coronation of the Queen.

Philatetic co-ordinator for the Bermuda Postal Service, Stanley Taylor, said yesterday that details of the new stamp would be forthcoming. He also encouraged the public to pick up a set or first day cover of the four heritage stamps which were released on May 15.

Arts, crafts and design were featured in the four stamps and Mr. Taylor said special acknowledgements were in order for Christ Church in Warwick, Chesley Trott, Micheal Hooper, Ronnie Chameau and Sheila Semos who helped in the designs.

Mr. Taylor said: "This collection continues the Bermuda Post Office's efforts to portray all facets of Bermuda's heritage, culture and history."

The stamps represent the following:

35c Banana and Palm Dolls - Handcrafted banana and palm dolls, exquisitely detailed and comprised entirely from local flora, are a real collector's prize

70c Model Boats - The creation of model boats reflects a time-honoured tradition in Bermuda . Models highlight Bermuda's innovative contributions to ship design as well as significant voyages made by early settlers.

80c Cedar sculpture - Bermuda's first settlers discovered an island rich in thick forest of the native cedar Juniperus bermudiana. The wood was used to build the first houses, ships, tools, as well as furniture.

$1.00 Bermuda silver - The silversmithing industry in Bermuda is highlighted in this issue of stamps. Before 1900, 38 silversmiths worked in Bermuda, producing objects requiring simple technology, such as spoons and other small work, including buckles, buttons, and jewellery. The diversity of backgrounds of silversmiths, combined with their constant migration, make defining a local, indigenous style of Bermuda silver difficult. The greatest single influence on design was the considerable number of imports from Boston, New York and Philadelphia.
