Regiment considering holding Grenada camp

Bermuda Regiment chiefs flew out to Grenada yesterday to assess whether next year?s annual overseas camp should be held there rather than Camp Blanding in Florida.

Regiment spokesman Captain Wayne Smith said the hurricane-hit island could use help and it would give recruits hands-on disaster recovery training.

The two-week camp which takes up to 200 Regiment members is usually booked for March or April and Captain Smith said Grenada would still need help then.

Recently Regiment volunteers helped the Cayman Islands recover from hurricane damage while at the same time helping hone the skills of recruits in disaster recovery.

However Capt. Smith said he did not believe the Regiment should abandon its military training in favour of concentrating on more practical skills.

He said the Regiment had three roles ? assisting Police in maintaining internal security, ceremonial parades and hurricane relief which were all still relevant.

Regiment Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Edward Lamb, Training Officer Capt. William White and Staff Officer Major Malcolm Gregory flew out yesterday and will report their findings to the Governor and Government on their return, said Capt. Smith.
