Roberts backtracks on web broadcasts
Local businessman McCal Roberts said he had been mistaken when he announced he would be setting up a website in the New Year which would stream live broadcasts from Bermuda's television channels ZFB, VSB and Fresh TV.
"I want to apologise to all the broadcasting channels," he said yesterday. "And I'd definitely like to apologise to the public for misleading them."
Mr. Roberts announced last week that his website, www.bermudalive.com, would be up and running in 2004, streaming all three television stations and archiving their news. However, alarmed VSB station manager Mike Bishop contacted The Royal Gazette to say his station did not know about the idea, and had no interest in pursuing that option.
VSB already broadcasts on the web at www.vsb.bm, he said, and had no intention of changing that service right now.
Mr. Roberts told The Royal Gazette he had spoken with Rick Richardson of the Bermuda Broadcasting Company and Elmore Warren of Fresh Creations, who both seemed interested in the idea. "Rick Richardson is always a person you can sit down and talk to," he said, adding he had done an interview with Mr. Warren on Fresh. Mr. Warren told The Royal Gazette Fresh Creations has had no formal talks with Mr. Roberts about the idea of a web broadcast yet.
"It's just a good idea," he said, adding that anything to do with web broadcasting was usually worthwhile.
Mr. Richardson also said he had not spoken with Mr. Roberts formally on the idea, just in passing, and added that he knew very little about Mr. Roberts' plans.
"It's not something I'm entertaining right now," he said.
Mr. Roberts said he had to make the broadcasting companies more familiar with his product.
