Sandy follows in her daughters' footsteps
Sandy Scott is a trailblazer for single mothers as she will be graduating at the same time as her children this year.
Ms Scott, 39, is the mother of four daughters and she will be graduating with a degree in elementary education on August 11.
Eldest daughter Verlicia 18, will be graduating from CedarBridge Academy, while Sheri, 14, will graduate from the Bermuda Institute Twins KyAsia and KyAnne, ten, will be graduating this year from Harrington Sound Primary.
A para-educator at Purvis Primary School, Ms Scott was able to pursue her degree after undertaking a series of courses with Boston-based Wheelock College, affiliated with the Bermuda College.
"There were many times when I felt like giving up but with the support of my father, Hassan Madyun and my mother, Cynthia Tucker and a lot of prayer, I was able to make many sacrifices," Ms Scott said.
The divorced mother didn't finish high school but was able to obtain her GED from the Adult Institute in 1984 and in 2002 obtained an associates degree in human services from Bermuda College.
"A lot of single parents give up on their dreams but I want to encourage single mothers to consider going back to school and they can be achieved through perseverance and hard work," Ms Scott said.
"I believe in achieving dreams and I believe everyone is destined to for greatness. It was important that my children to see me complete my degree and it's positive reinforcement that we all have made achievements together."
Ms Scott said her journey has been a difficult one but one that she was very proud of.
The former Berkeley Institute student has also kept in the mind the Berkeley motto ? "keep the end in view".
Ms Scott has received financial assistance from her grandmother, Rosalind Minors, and moral support from special friend Dwayne Daniels, and from the church she attends, Hamilton Seventh-day Adventist.
She also received support from the Bermuda Union of Teachers, Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventist and Restoration Ministry.
With her degree in elementary education she plans to continue helping children.
"I have worked in the child care field for about the last ten years and I want to prepare children for life and the tools to overcome problems," Ms Scott said.
"I believe children benefit from other people's experiences, I was in trouble at school and so I have a lot to contribute to children in meaningful ways.
