School closure means pupils may miss out
Parents fear their children could be left in limbo after Bermuda Christian Academy announced it will close next month, leaving them no time to find a new private school.
Parent Dennis Carter said his 12-year-old son had passed on a letter on Monday announcing the closure but no reason had been given.
Yesterdayassistant principal Brenda Williams told : ?I have no authority to give any statement. You will have to talk to the president.?
When asked for the president?s name she said: ?I am not giving out any information.?
When asked why, she said: ?I have to go now.?
Mr. Carter said parents had been told to pay their bills by June 30.
?My concern is that most deadlines for schools in Bermuda are in March,? he said.
?This school just decided to close down right in the school year and has not given anyone any notice or taken into consideration the parents.?
He has a 12-year-old at the school in Clarendon Road, Smith?s and had hoped to have his 11-year-old start there in September.
?Kids who picked to go there have not been informed but they have given up spaces at other schools so they could attend this school,? Mr. Carter said.
He said the school, which has around 50 students, had built up a good reputation and did not even need to advertise to bring students because it had a waiting list.
Asked what he would do if he could not find another private school, Mr. Carter said: ?I don?t know ? it all just hit me yesterday.
?Right now I am demanding an explanation of why the school has done this to me.?
He said he had tried to contact the principal Vincent Williams but had been told he was off the Island.
