Scott: Still no decision on Morgan?s Point

Premier Alex Scott insisted yesterday there was no confusion within Government over Morgan's Point.

In October, Works and Engineering Minister Terry Lister announced the huge former US Naval Annexe in Southampton was to become a housing development.

The surprise announcement prompted Government's Department of Communication and Information to issue a "clarifying" statement last month saying no options had been ruled out.

But at a public meeting last week, Tourism Minister Renee Webb said a tourism development was "off the table" in Cabinet, although she was fighting to get a change of mind because she supports a tourism development there.

Mr. Scott said yesterday: "I wish to make it clear that there is no confusion in Cabinet about the future of Morgan's Point.

"With our limited land mass, Bermuda faces disparate and sometimes conflicting demands for this valuable piece of land ? one of the last major parcels of real estate available for major development.

"It is extremely important, therefore, that we give careful, reasoned and balanced consideration to the development of Morgan's Point in a way that takes proper account of the community's social and economic needs. To do any less would be irresponsible.

"There is no confusion and no option has been ruled out at this stage. Indeed, the acting Minister of Works and Engineering clearly spelled out this position in a press release issued on November 10.

"It is true that Ministers may have expressed individual views about this site. However, Cabinet has not, to date, taken a collective view."
