The man charged with committing a sexual attack on a woman in her own home was unanimously found not guilty by a Supreme Court jury yesterday.

In swift deliberation over the facts of the case in just under an hour, the six man, six woman jury returned a not-guilty verdict on the 28-year-old man.

And as Assistant Justice Charles-Etta Simmons and the court listened to the verdict being read, the 27-year-old woman, who accused the man, cried uncontrollably at the decision, while the man, who had an interpreter during the week long court proceedings breathed, a sigh of relief.

The foreign national maintained his innocence of the charge that was said to have occurred on March 23, this year.

Defence attorney Patrick Doherty asked that since his client had been exonerated, his belongings and travel documents should be returned so that he could return home.

After the verdict, Mr. Doherty said: "I am pleased with the jury's verdict and that my client is now free to go home after spending six months in jail."

The woman claimed that after a night of drinking and dancing at the Swizzle Inn with several friends, her male roommate and other friends invited the man back to their home for more drinks.

The man was a stranger to the group of friends until that point.

While back at the house the woman testified that the man entered her room uninvited and had sex with her while she was asleep.

She continued her testimony saying that she thought that the man was her boyfriend.

However the man, said in his testimony that he was invited by the woman into her room and they kissed and from her movements, he understood that she wanted to have sex.
