Sir John backs Madeiros in Mayor of Hamilton race
Former Premier Sir John Swan is supporting Sutherland Madeiros as the next Mayor of Hamilton.
Mr. Madeiros and Miss Sonia Grant are the only two candidates, so far, who have announced their decisions to run in the election for the next Mayor of the City of Hamilton. The closing date for nominations is October 19.
Jay Bluck defeated Miss Grant in the mayoral election earlier this year, however the death of Mr. Bluck on September 1 has led to a fresh election to be held on October 26.
Sir John, a prominent businessman and city property developer, said Mr. Maderios would bring years of managerial experience to the job saying: ?Early in his career, Mr. Madeiros was a banker and during his 29-year tenure with the Bank of Bermuda, held a number of managerial positions. Before he retired, he spent the last 14 years running his own business, which greatly enhanced his managerial skills.?
Sir John, who has previously been critical of Miss Grant?s visions for the City added: ?I believe that his (Mr. Madeiros) proven and tested managerial skills together with the time and energy to fully devote himself to the job and his vision for the City of Hamilton, makes him an ideal candidate for the post of Mayor.?
Earlier this month the current Deputy Mayor David Dunkley and Councillor Graeme Outerbridge threw their support behind Miss Grant. At that time Mr. Dunkley said he felt Miss Grant had the experience to fulfil the role of mayor, while Mr. Outerbridge said he supported Miss Grant for a number of reasons including her pledge to make the City of Hamilton election process more transparent.
