The Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts was the setting for a book-launching event that was both unique and most enjoyable in that not just one book was put in circulation but three. And it was a celebration of the efforts of six school teachers who were brought to the stage and duly acknowledged.

The Ministry of Education had commissioned the books to bolster the social studies curriculum for primary one, primary two and primary three schools.

The educator who had oversight of the project, Mrs. Leona Scott, explained that the purpose of social studies is to develop effective citizens, to enable students to understand their world, both local and global, to participate effectively in their world, and to explain their relationship to other people and institutions such as school, government, business and the environment.

These three books, Mrs. Scott said, would begin to develop those skills within the young learner.

It is hoped they will begin to build pride in being Bermudian and to have a better appreciation for Bermuda by persons who are not Bermudian.

"Use of the books would not be restricted to the teaching of social studies only, but can be used for reading, writing and speaking in the teaching of English language, arts as well as health, science, character education and information technology," explained Mrs. Scott.

The six authors who were escorted to the stage by students from their respective classes are Tricia Foggo, Cecily Richardson, Karen Trott, Joann Dill, Da'Shawn Doars and Tamisheka Swan. They were roundly applauded as Education Minister Randy Horton presented each with a commemorative plaque.

"You are not only teachers now, you are published authors as well," he told them.

Emcee for the evening was Carla Zuill, who read a letter from Premier Ewart Brown, who was abroad, praising all involved in the project, especially the authors. Deputy Premier and Finance Minister Paula Cox and other Cabinet Ministers were in the audience as well as Permanent Secretaries from Education and other Government Ministries, school principals, teachers, parents and community leaders.
