A self-confessed drug addict who swallowed almost $200,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis was sentenced to six years in jail in the Supreme Court last week.

Alfred Mallory, 35, appeared un-represented in Supreme Court to face charges for drug possession and importation.

Mallory told the court he brought the drugs into the Island to support his heroin habit and was to be paid with $15,000 worth of heroin for smuggling the drugs.

When Assistant Justice Archibald Warner asked Mallory why he was un-represented, he told the court that he had applied for legal aid since he began serving his jail time in March but had not received a response from the legal aid department.

Crown Counsel Shakira Dill said that Mallory arrived on the Island on January 4 on a charter flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Customs officers stopped Mallory and had his bag swabbed. They discovered cannabis resin from the swab but could not find drugs in Mallory?s bag or hidden on his body. After asking Mallory if he had swallowed drugs officers noticed he began sweating and shaking uncontrollably. He was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for a stomach x-ray which revealed the presence of suspicious objects in his stomach.

On January 5 Mallory excreted 64 pellets, five of which were diamorphine, 51 cocaine and eight cannabis resin. Ms Dill said the total street value of the drugs was $194,630.

A Police Officer took the stand and told the court Mallory has three previous convictions for drug possession. When asked if he had anything to say, Mallory said he was sincerely sorry for his actions and had been battling a heroin addiction since 1982.

Mr. Warner sentenced Mallory to the six years and ordered him to receive treatment for his addiction while in jail.
