Small crowds, poor weather plagues motocross spectacular
Despite disappointing crowds, motocross organiser Michael Jones has promised the weekend spectacular at the Wellington Oval will be repeated.
He said only around 2,500 spectators turned up yesterday, about half of what he wanted, and even fewer made the journey to St. George's on Saturday.
He said: “It's nowhere near what we were aiming at.
“Hopefully we won't lose too much money so we can do this in the future. It would be really helpful if people came out and supported it.
“We will do it again. It's a blow. We are going to suck it up but we will be back.”
He said around 15,000 people had attended the monster truck rally in June.
He said: “It's got to the be the right venue and the right atmosphere. But this weekend just wasn't it.”
And the unsettled weather didn't help said Mr. Jones, despite the suitability of the Wellington Oval as a venue.
“I don't know if they are going to allow us back - it depends on how we put the field back together. We have it in our budget to totally redo the field.”
He said those who had attended enjoyed the event, particularly the freestyle event in which rider Tommy Fortin span 360 degrees in the air before landing.
He said one rider suffered a gash needing 60 stitches on Saturday but returned to ride yesterday.
Around 47 riders from the US, Canada and Switzerland plus maybe 40 locals competed at the weekend.
Mr. Jones said: “It's a big production, believe me.”
Spectator Jameelah Raynor enjoyed the show and said the rest of the crowd could have been more excited about it to show support for the riders.
“Bermudians are hard to please anyway. That's the bottom line. It was exciting and different.”
“But $50 is a little steep but it's a one-off. That's why people should get into it a lot more.
“We always complain there is nothing to do. It's unfortunate for people who couldn't afford it.”
Another spectator said: “Bermuda needs more things like this. Bermuda is dead. They need more activities for the youth.”
He said people preferred the monster truck venue at Kindley Field because it was larger and there was easier parking.
David Baker, 14, said: “I enjoyed the free-style and the 250s. I like when they put their feet on the handlebars. I would definitely come again.”
Mother Ronnell Darrell brought her young son. She said: “Anything in Bermuda is expensive. But I think they should lower the price and get a much better turn out.
“The souvenirs are expensive, too. They need to be reasonable because young children see and they want.”
