Southampton man murdered
Police tonight confirmed that one man was shot and killed and another severely injured in a drive-by shooting on Camp Hill Road, Southampton earlier in the evening.
The 30-year-old murder victim was reported shot around 9 p.m. as Boxing Day wound down.
The shootings were the second in as many days as a Pembroke man was shot in the shoulder in the Camp Hill area on Christmas morning. He is understood to be in hospital recovering from non-life threatening wounds.
Police had been out in force all day conducting random searches at strategic points, particularly on Kindley Field Road prior to a major Dudley Eve football match at Wellington Oval.
In an unprecedented move, Assistant Commissioner Carlton Adams called a press conference at Police Headquarters in Prospect for 11.30 p.m. last night to confirm the murder and the launch of the probe.
Asked whether more attention should have been paid to Camp Hill, he replied: "Attention was paid to areas we considered to be flashpoints. In the aftermath of a soccer match, it's where people gather. Hindsight is always 20-20 (vision). We have 21 square miles to address."
Police say a number of people were in the area at the time of Christmas Day's shooting and are urging witnesses to come forward.
