Stiff sentence for pest who got 12-year-old pregnant

Puisne Justice Charles-Etta Simmons had stern words for a Sandys Parish man who admitted getting a 12-year-old pregnant and having sex with two others.

?With ever increasing number of young girls falling victim to men like the defendant, this Court must act,?Justice Charles-Etta Simmons said as she sentenced Jason Eugene Darrell, 23, of Sandys Parish to seven years in prison. ?For this serious offence only a lengthy sentence of imprisonment is appropriate.?

When Darrell?s lawyer, Peter Farge, alleged the victims came on to Darrell, Mrs. Justice Simmons said firmly: ?These girls cannot be liable for what happened to them.

?The law protects them from men like this because they do not have the discernment to not fall victim to men who to try to give them alcohol or talk them into having sex, for that matter.?

?The defendant may think he has skills with older women,? she continued, referring to what Darrell told a psychologist. ?That?s fine. He can run any ?game? he wants (to adult women) but he has to stay away from young girls. There needs to be some psychological help here, because the defendant clearly feels no self worth unless having sex with young girls.?

Darrell, who had been on remand at Westgate since April, received one seven year sentence for three counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor under 14. These charges resulted from relations Darrell had with two girls over a four day period in January 2002.

He also received a three-year sentence for another count of unlawful carnal knowledge, this time with a girl between 14 and 16 years old in March 2003.

Darrell, who will serve the sentences concurrently, admitted earlier this year in Supreme Court that he had sex with the three underage girls.

In January 2002, Darrell said that in two separate incidents he gave alcohol to girls under-14.

After getting one of the girls drunk, he then threatened to throw her out of his house in the middle night if she didn?t have sex with him.

Fearful, the girl gave in. He also admitted to sleeping with the girl a second time.

It was also revealed during a special hearing in April that Darrell impregnated the other girl, who was only 12.

The defendant initially denied having intercourse with the girl, but when DNA testing of her aborted foetus revealed that he was the biological father, he admitted to the crime.

Darrell also admitted to having sex with a third girl between the age of 14 and 16.

It was revealed during yesterday?s sentencing that a court ordered psychological report showed that only two weeks ago Darrell showed signs of repeating his offence.

?For Darrell sex is a score card he keeps with his friends,? said Crown counsel Graveney Bannister said, hinting at the results of court ordered psychological report.

Mr. Bannister told the court that Darrell would brag about sleeping with the girls with his friends and just two weeks ago, said he did not feel it was wrong.

Before sentencing, Darrell apologised to the court, the victims and their family for his conduct, saying: ?At the time I had very low self esteem and in a very depressed mood.

?I was drinking abundant amounts of alcohol, but I have addressed all my wrongs and am a changed man.?

But Mrs. Justice Simmons fired back: ?Mr. Darrell you have a blatant disregard for the laws and complete inability to empathise with others. According to your psychological report, you can only care for yourself.?

Inclusive to his sentences she ordered that Darrell be treated in Westgate?s sexual offenders programme.
