Stop linking machete attacks to club, irate owner tells Police
The owner of Champions Private Sports Club on Reid Street expressed anger that his establishment was yet again named by Police as the site of a vicious machete attack which actually occurred across the street.
Yesterday, Police appealed to witnesses of an assault near the junction of Reid and Court streets at around 4.15 a.m. on Sunday which resulted a 24-year-old Paget man being hit in the back of the head and a 26-year-old Pembroke man sustaining facial injuries. ?It had nothing to do with Champions,? owner Delvin Bean said yesterday. ?We are not catering to garbage.?
Mr. Bean said his club had a diverse membership but some people in the community were afraid to join up because of bad publicity caused by erroneous Police information.
?Everyone is scared to come up to the place,? he said. ?I called Police and asked why they keep using the Champions name. They sent their apologies and said they get information from officers who attended the scene.?
A spokeswoman at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital said yesterday the victims were both in stable conditions on a general ward.
Police asked anyone with any information about the machete attack to call Det. Con. Swainson on 295-0011.
