Summer camp caters to diabetic children
Little Tyke Service summer day camp has done something that other summer camps have yet to do ? offer their services to diabetic children.
One of the owners of Little Tyke Service, Zolita Smith said that despite the challenge of caring for diabetic children in the end it is very rewarding.
The staff of the camp have been educated about diabetes.
Mrs. Smith said that because her camp accepts diabetic children, it gives them a chance to lead a normal life.
?Most people don?t want to take them on because of the challenge,? she said.
Little Tyke Service summer day camp has about 50 students a week and has a variety of activities including horse and buggy riding, Pottery Creations, the water park at Wyndham, Dolphin Quest, fishing, nature walks, bowling, ferry boat rides, Perfume Factory, arts and crafts, Snorkel Park, bike days, a barbecue, Devil?s Hole Aquarium and swimming.
The two diabetic children in the camp both have Type One diabetes. Mrs. Smith said that one of the hard parts about dealing with diabetic children is that they are very ?high maintenance?. However, the parents are very grateful that Little Tyke Service accepts their children.
Michelle Smith, the other owner of Little Tyke Service said: ?We have to constantly keep an eye on their blood sugar so that they don?t go into coma.?
She said that you have to know how to figure out the calories, grams, carbohydrates and units in food that the children need to eat. The caregivers work with parents, nurses and dieticians to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
