Swan: Come clean on hotel

Opposition Senate Leader yesterday called on Government to come clean on what was happening with plans for a new hotel on the Club Med site in St. George?s.

Last summer, Government said a lease handing the property over to developers St. George?s Renaissance Consortium would be presented by the end of the year, but this had not materialised, Sen. Swan said.

He said Consortium head Wanda Dorosz announced in March that the prestigious hotel chain Four Seasons was lined up to manage the new hotel on the St. George?s site. All that was required was to finalise a deal with the Government.

Then in July it was announced that a decision on the Consortium?s $210 million plan to redevelop the property was going to be made by the end of the summer.

In August a decision was not made and a Government official said it was currently reviewing the terms and conditions of the lease to the Consortium.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Transport, Marc Telemaque, said it would be debated in the House of Assembly in late 2005.

Sen. Swan looked to Works Minister and asked: ?Are the residents of St. George?s going to get a Christmas present from the Government??

Sen. Swan said the St. George?s community needs a fully functioning hotel in addition to the St. George?s Club.

He said the direction the community did not want to be overly dependent on cruise ships and the arrival of a hotel would benefit businesses in the area. In particular he wanted the Government to do something about the old Club Med property.
