Swinging for charity
WHEN you wake up this morning spare a thought for Brian Morris. And whatever you do, please do not call him on the phone! For Morris will no doubt be sound asleep following his 24-hour marathon 'round' of golf at Belmont Hills.
Morris, the head pro at Belmont Hills, started his round at 8 a.m. yesterday and finished at 8 a.m. this morning. This is the second year he has played the exhausting round. But it is all for a good cause.
Last year Morris played the marathon round to raise money for his cousin Lori Mello who had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and was facing staggering medical bills for potentially lifesaving treatments.
Unfortunately Lori died this past summer. But the strength she showed in fighting her disease so greatly impressed Morris that he decided to make the marathon round an annual event to raise money for others suffering from cancer.
"Lori and her best friends were so inspired by the generosity of this island (last year) that they vowed to continue to help others, and the concept of the Fight For Life Foundation was born," said Morris.
Last year Morris managed to raise $65,000 and he is hoping to go better this year.
"My main goal is to raise as much as I can and I will continue to do this every year for as long as I can for whoever I can. Golf has been special to me and I have lost my mother and a cousin through cancer. I know the costs and I know the pain that those suffering from cancer go through and this is what I can do to help."
Morris said that pledges can be made either per hole or a set amount.
