TCD to crack down on fake licences
If the Transport Control Department has its way fabricating a driver's licence may soon become the fast lane to a $1,600 fine, or even a six month stay in prison.
Director, Mr. Kevin Monkman said yesterday this is the department's answer to the recent escalation in the number of fake or altered Bermuda drivers' licenses confiscated at local nightclubs when underage partiers attempt to get into clubs.
"We at TCD and the Road Safety Council have a number of concerns about this practice and we're taking the matter very seriously,"said Mr. Monkman who's comments came after growing concerns at TCD about the number of underage youths who are altering real drivers' licenses with false information or creating fake licenses.
"We are concerned that young people are using these fake ID's to gain access to alcohol, which could lead to other unwise decisions - such as driving while under the influence."
"The Motor Car Act of 1951 spells out very clearly that it is an offence for any person to fraudulently use or alter their driver's license. It also states that, upon summary convictions, such offences are punishable by either six months imprisonment, a fine of $1,680 or both as well as loss of the drivers license."
