Teen breaks neck in beach mishap

An 18-year-old who was severely injured after diving into shallow water at Horseshoe Bay on Thursday has been flown to the Lahey Clinic in Boston for treatment.

Matthew Raynor, the son of Reginald John Raynor and Shelia Darrell of Southampton, was airlifted out of the Island yesterday afternoon for treatment.

Pamela Fubler, a family member told yesterday that Mr. Raynor had broken his neck and is due to undergo surgery in a couple of days. Although his condition is serious he is able to move the upper part of his body and has recovered full speech and mental ability.

?We have faith that everything will be okay,? said Ms Fubler.

?He loves his family and at the moment we are with him to do everything we can. Whatever happens we?re going to deal with it. At the moment we are trying to lift his spirits and encourage him.?

Mr. Raynor ? described as an outgoing young boxer and May 24 marathon runner ? works with his father, who owns Raynor?s Shell Service Station on Middle Road in Southampton.

Ms Fubler said Mr. Raynor was running with his brother on the beach when he jumped into the water to cool off. When Police arrived at the scene on Thursday night, members of the public were found trying to revive the young man. Officers assisted with CPR and helped him to regain consciousness.
