Ten pre-fab houses to be imported

Government intends to import ten emergency houses worth between $20,000 to $37,000 each in the coming months to ease the housing shortage for people in ?dire need?.

?The Ministry understands that solving the current housing challenges, particularly those that are immediate, will involve some innovative methods, such as the introduction of the pre?manufactured houses,? a Ministry of Housing spokeswoman said yesterday.

?It is important to note that these units are in keeping with the Ministry?s overall housing strategy and will assist residents who have an immediate or emergency need.

?Ministry officials note that the funds were allocated for the pre-manufactured homes in the last Budget. The units, which were purchased in the US, have been deemed structurally safe and ultimately, the Ministry is seeking to introduce ten units, which will go towards providing housing for residents in dire need. As was noted earlier, the Ministry is in discussions to decide on the most suitable locations.

?Finally, the Minister realises that the one of the most important issues facing Bermuda residents is the lack of affordable housing. This issue has become increasingly important over the years and it is an area where the Government has dedicated its attention.

?As a result, the Ministry of Works and Engineering and Housing has focused its efforts to enacting solutions. This means exploring ideas that may be unique.?
