Thief chased down by business owner

A man who admitted breaking into his childhood friends? businesses was remanded into custody yesterday in Magistrate?s Court.

Chris Winslow Ray, 36, of Warwick, pleaded guilty to entering 15 Parliament Street as a trespasser with the intent to steal.

The complainants in the matter are Kevin Smith of Granite Enforcement Team and Michael Ming of Digital Electronic Security, who are childhood friends of the defendant.

The court heard in a summary read by Crown Counsel Paula Tyndale that on December 23, Mr. Ming stopped at the office and saw the defendant leaving.

He also saw a door that was propped open and damaged.

Mr. Ming ran after the defendant and saw him walking on Victoria Street. He went back into the offices, saw that nothing was missing and called Mr. Smith.

The complainants later saw Ray walking on Front Street and approached him about the break-in.

The defendant admitted to the break-in but told them he didn?t know that he was breaking into their businesses.

Ray got into a car with the complainants and said: ?You don?t have any prints or cameras. You may as well let me go. Jail has failed me. I need real help.?

Ray said the reason he broke into the offices was because he needed money.

He also said if he knew the businesses were Mr. Smith?s and Mr. Ming?s, he wouldn?t have done it.

?I do apologise for my actions. I do admit that I have a problem,? he told the court

Ray asked for the court?s assistance and admitted he needed drug court.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter until March 6 and ordered a Social Inquiry Report. The defendant was remanded in custody.
