Transport, services to be disrupted

Public services will be disrupted today when BIU members meet to hear the details of a binding arbitration deal for blue collar workers.

Buses and ferries will be halted between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and roadworks and garbage collections will also stop as Ministry of Works and Engineering staff attend the meeting at the Union Street headquarters.

It is understood the meeting is simply an opportunity for BIU officials to present the details of a collective agreement to the membership.

"It is anticipated that once the general meeting has been concluded, services will resume as normal," said a Government spokesperson.

"The affected Ministries and Departments apologise to the public for any inconvenience this may cause."

In late September, Bermuda was hit by an Island-wide strike after members walked out in support of a sacked CableVision worker, disrupting the post-Fabian clean up operation.
