Trespassing pool divers are risking their lives ? Police

Children who are breaking into Saltus pool and diving off a ten-foot high roof are daily risking death, Police have warned.

Sgt. Stephen Gunn said the daredevil stunts off a canopy took place on weekends and nights when no adults were around to help if someone gets hurt.

?When one of those children gets hurt and the other child has no idea of what to do that child could easily die. We are appealing to parents ? if your child is coming home smelling of chlorine and there is no pool in your backyard we are asking for your assistance to keep your children out of this area.?

Between five and ten kids aged between 12 and 15 have been breaking through fences topped with sharp security wire and illegally using the pool said Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) Aquatics Manager Ben Smith.

?It happens every summer. As soon as the weather gets a little warmer they try to get in.?

But he said the danger never diminished.

?I am worried if someone slips they are going to hit their head and then go in the water. It will be dark. Their friends won?t know anything about water safety so that person might drown.?

He said in Florida drowning was the number one cause of death for teenagers but the lack of accidents here had made people dangerously complacent. ?People think they can jump off the rocks or the roof and is it not a big deal until someone slips ? either paralysis themselves or dies and then it becomes news. We need to prevent that before it happens.?

Sometimes kids have been throwing missiles at swimmers after being denied daytime access said Police.

?They have been throwing rocks and bolts ? a number of items ? to harass the other children,? said Sgt. Stephen Gunn.

Mr. Smith said BASA was going to run a free Get Wet programme on Saturdays covering learning to swim and advanced water skills starting at the pool in September while there is the $50-a-week White?s Island programme starting in July.
