UBP strikes committee to deal with rebel MP

The United Bermuda Party have formed a committee to decide the fate of MP Trevor Moniz, more than two years after they made him an outcast.

Mr. Moniz had the Parliamentary whip withdrawn in October 1999, meaning that he was excluded from internal plans of the party's MPs, because he towed an independent line and failed to attend party meetings.

Now a committee of five MPs will look into the matter and make recommendations to a wider meeting of all 13 of the party's MPs.

The rebel MP said he wrote asking to be readmitted shortly after his suspension and then wrote again in August. He received a letter on November 19 informing him of the meeting to decide his fate.

Mr. Moniz said he would write back saying he wanted to be back in the fold. He told The Royal Gazette: "I am going through the process of applying to get back. It's thought that Mr. Moniz drew the ire of party colleagues by setting up a list of member's interests and he also went against former leader Sir John Swan in his bid to bring McDonald's to the Island and opt for independence.
